One morning in 2008 while working with my 14-year-old son on chemistry, we began a study of valence electrons in an atom. The author of the book listed seven rules and their exceptions related to how a chemist uses valence electrons.
The author then concluded his explanation by describing the principles behind these rules, assuring the student that memorization and detailed application of the rules wasn’t necessary if the student understood the principles. When the student understood the principles, then he could determine the uses of valence electrons on his own, without the aid of the rules.

HEARKENING
TO
HIS
MESSAGE
FOR
ME
|
Throughout my walk with the Lord, I found that rules were easily distorted—even “good” rules—so Biblical principles rather than rules became foundational to my Christian journey in all aspects of my life. I also applied and still apply principles rather than rules while discipling my reasoning children because that’s how God has parented me.
When I read this chemistry book’s author’s comments about rules and principles, I saw that the Lord’s principles apply to fields of academic study as well.
The Lord spoke to me—not audibly—through this textbook and author, confirming to me that I was indeed released and at liberty to make decisions on my own as they were in keeping with the principles of His Will and filled with His Life. In Him, we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).
Lord,
Thank you for Your confirmation
about living within the liberty of Your principles.
If you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the Law.
~Galatians 5:18
