CIRCUMSTANCES

Four of my children were playing outdoors with six of our neighbor children one beautiful spring afternoon. They were having such a good time on the swingset—laughing and sliding and climbing on top of the little playhouse roof—that I left the quietness of my house, took my library books on shade plants out to the bench near the swingset, and began reading.
Our little five-year-old neighbor boy was happily swinging as high as he could when he sweetly shouted to me, "Mrs. Miller!!"
"Yes, darlin’!"
"Why are you reading out here on the bench?"
"I think I just wanted to enjoy this beautiful spring day with all of you."
Over the hubbub, he shouted, "Is it just more peaceful out here?"
I had to laugh at that. Ten children—ages 2 through 14—playing together outdoors isn't usually what you'd think of as peaceful, but I answered him, "Yes, sweetie, it IS more peaceful." And I began to tear up.

Why would I tear up over that comment? I wondered.
I realized that God had brought my life from a place of such disarray to a place of indescribable peace; and He spoke to me in a child's voice to remind me that peace is not what's happening around you but what He has done in you.
Lord,
Thank you for children
who minister so sweetly to us
if we have ears to hear.
For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.
~Matthew 19:14
