When I officially began homeschooling in 1994, I had two goals in mind for my children:
- Relational: They would establish meaningful and deep relationships with God through Christ, with me, and with each other.
- Educational: They would develop a love of learning and not suffer through the same anemic education I had experienced during my growing-up years.
Little did I know at that time that these desires of my heart for my children were actually the same desires Father-God had for me, His child.
Over the last 15 years in addition to marriage and parenting, homeschooling has been a tool for my growth!

Most moms, myself included, tend to think of educational development in three stages: elementary school, middle school, high school. If you’ve researched classical education, you will see three stages in that paradigm as well: grammar, logic, rhetoric. Each stage emphasizes various aspects of the child’s educational growth, depending on his ability.
Through these educational stages with my children, I too experienced various seasons of growth.
My “education” did not require the traditional 12 years. Instead, these seasons sometimes overlapped and sometimes lasted only a few months, depending on my response to and cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
One of the main reasons for my growth through Christian homeschooling is that the process of homeschooling was not at all what I expected it would be.
