Correct and Instruct

CORRECT AND INSTRUCT EXAMPLE

Discipling children involves correction and instruction.

Using the example of interrupting, you may say something like this to your child as you correct and instruct him:

“Do not interrupt.” [Correction]

“Instead, be quick to listen and slow to speak.” [Tell the child what he should be doing]

“Self-centeredness is at the root of interrupting, and lack of respect for others is at the root of self-centeredness. You are also lacking self-control.” [Why he must]

“Do you see that you need God’s help to overcome this self-centeredness so you can exercise self-control and respect?” [How to go about it]

Then pray with your child.

Correction:

  • Tell the child what he should not be doing.
  • Instruction:

  • Tell the child what he should be doing.

  • Explain why he must.

  • Explain how to go about it.
  • Let the Lord lead you to live the Scripture related to
    the correction and instruction
so you can speak the intent of the Word
that will minister to your particular child.

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable
    for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
    ~II Timothy 3:16-17
